Culture and Identity in a Migration Society: The German-Bulgarian Heritage
A case study by Carolin Martinov
With a total of 319.271 Bulgarians living in Germany, it is by far the biggest European diaspora of Bulgarians (statista: 2019). For them it may seem difficult to answer questions on their home and identity as the separation of those cultures start to blur with each generation being raised away from their ancestors’ home. Assemblies and festivals that contribute to open the migration community help to exchange culture and ideas of a transcultural society.
The case study aims to inform about the given history and examine the way shared/contradictory heritage is dealt with in these communitis.
